There was little suspense once Outer Cove took the field at its home Kelly Park. Playing in front of its own community, the club rolled to the 2026 Softball NL Women’s Fastpitch Provincial Championship with a perfect 6-0 record, punctuating the run with a 13-1 demolition of U17 NL in the final on August 2.
The tournament, held July 31 to August 2 at Kelly Park in Outer Cove, drew five teams: the host club, the provincial U17 and U15 development sides, Bay Roberts and Southern Shore. Outer Cove treated the round robin as a statement. It opened on July 31 with back-to-back shutouts — 10-0 over U15 NL and 10-0 over U17 NL — then piled on the next day with an 11-0 win over Bay Roberts and a 13-2 result against Southern Shore. By the time the playoff round arrived, the host had outscored its opponents by a staggering margin.
The championship day only confirmed the gap. Outer Cove handled Southern Shore 13-6 in the semifinal, then met U17 NL again in the final and left no doubt, winning 13-1 to claim gold. U17 NL, which had reached the final by beating Bay Roberts 10-2 in the other semi, took silver; Bay Roberts, Southern Shore and U15 NL rounded out the standings.
Outer Cove’s dominance was both collective and individual. Hannah Healey was named tournament MVP after a two-way clinic — batting .636 with seven RBI while going 3-0 in the circle with a 1.26 ERA and 17 strikeouts. Teammate Madelyn Transue took Top Batter honours with a .667 average, giving Outer Cove the two leading offensive awards of the event. The lone individual honour to escape the host went to U17 NL’s Claire Strapp, named Top Pitcher after a 2-1 record with 15 strikeouts over 14 innings.
The championship roster reflected a deep, balanced side: Janaya Collier, Hannah Healey, Halle Joy, Peyton Noseworthy, Hillary Powell, Sarah Power, Kiley Rice, Jorja Roff, Claire Stokes and Madelyn Transue, guided by coaches Steven Rice and Wilf Collier. Winning a provincial title on home dirt, against a field that included the province’s top young development teams, gave the result added weight — Outer Cove did not simply beat its peers but overwhelmed a cross-section of the province’s best.
Fastpitch retains a loyal following in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the presence of the U15 and U17 provincial squads in the same bracket points to a healthy pipeline of talent moving up behind the senior clubs. For those younger players, sharing a field with a side as sharp as Outer Cove is instructive, even in lopsided defeats — a benchmark of the level required to compete for a provincial crown.
