A home for the games we love
NL Sports Talk is an independent sports media outlet dedicated entirely to Newfoundland and Labrador. We exist for one reason: to give the province’s athletes, coaches, volunteers and fans the coverage they deserve — coverage that too often gets lost when national outlets look past the island and the big land to the north.
Sport here has its own rhythm. It is ball hockey in a parking lot on a July evening, a minor-hockey final that packs a small-town arena, a fastpitch tournament where three generations of a family share the same bleacher. It is also the moments that reach the wider world — a St. John’s kid lifting a Stanley Cup, a Newfoundlander signing a professional contract, a provincial champion boarding a plane for a national final. NL Sports Talk was built to tell all of it, from the grassroots to the biggest stages, with the same care and the same local knowledge.
Started by fans, built for the community
NL Sports Talk grew out of a simple frustration shared by sports fans across the province: the scores were being played, the milestones were being reached, and hardly anyone outside the community was telling the story. A U18 team could sweep a provincial final, a local gymnast could win gold on an international stage, and it would pass with barely a headline. We decided that wasn’t good enough.
Based in Corner Brook — a city with a proud athletic history and the birthplace of the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games — we set out to build a platform that treats provincial sport as the main event, not an afterthought. What began as conversations among fans has become a dedicated source for news, features, results and analysis covering every corner of the province, from the west coast to the Avalon Peninsula and up into Labrador.
We are proudly independent and unapologetically local. We don’t cover Newfoundland and Labrador sport because it fills a slot in a national schedule. We cover it because it’s ours.
Our Mission
Championing local sport, one story at a time
Our mission is to celebrate, document and grow sport in Newfoundland and Labrador — giving every athlete, from the youngest player at their first tournament to the professional flying the province’s flag abroad, a place where their story is told well.
That means more than reporting final scores. It means context and history, the human stories behind the results, and a steady spotlight on the volunteers and coaches who hold the whole system together. It means covering women’s sport, youth sport, and the disciplines that rarely make national broadcasts with the same seriousness we give the marquee games. And it means being a connective thread between communities that are often separated by hundreds of kilometres of highway and water, but united by the same love of competition.
“When a kid from a small Newfoundland community sees their team in the headlines, they learn that what they do here matters. That’s the whole point.”

What We Stand For
Our values
- Local first. Newfoundland and Labrador sport is never a footnote here. It is the headline, the feature and the follow-up.
- Accuracy above all. We get the names, the scores and the details right, and we’re honest about what we can and can’t confirm. Trust is earned one story at a time.
- Every athlete counts. Women’s and men’s, youth and senior, mainstream and overlooked — all of it gets covered with equal care.
- Community at the core. We champion the volunteers, coaches and families who make sport possible, not just the players on the scoresheet.
- Independent and fair. We answer to our readers and our communities — no one else.
This is your platform too
The best local sports coverage is a two-way street. Coaches, parents, league organizers and athletes are the eyes and ears of their communities, and we rely on them. If your team won a title, your athlete signed a deal, your league has news, or your community facility is getting an upgrade, we want to hear about it.
Have a tip, a photo, a result to report, or a story you think deserves attention? Want to advertise with us or partner on coverage? Reach out using the details below — no story is too small, and no corner of the province is too far.
